The Representation of Musical Entertainment in Middle English Romances

Abstract

Riassunto: Nei romanzi medievali l’intrattenimento musicale ha spesso un ruolo centrale,
come ulteriore manifestazione del fasto della corte. Corni, tamburi e vielle, arpe, organi e
cornamuse, risuonano nella sala creando un’atmosfera festosa. I diversi strumenti vengono
menzionati in lunghe liste attentamente studiate per trasmettere un senso di magnificenza
ed armonia. Se da un lato questi elenchi potrebbero essere stati utilizzati come figure di
amplificazione, dall’altro potrebbero avere avuto anche una funzione narrativa. Il presente
lavoro si propone quindi di analizzare la rappresentazione dell’intrattenimento musicale
nei romanzi medio inglesi per capire se la scelta di specifici strumenti sia semplicemente
finalizzata ad enfatizzare la sontuosità della corte o piuttosto concepita per fornire ulteriori
chiavi interpretative.

Abstract: In medieval romances, musical entertainment often holds centre stage, as yet
another manifestation of courtly pomp. Horn players and drummers, fiddlers, crowd play-
ers and harpers, organists and bagpipers, all play together to construct a musical accompa-
niment that is meant to enhance the merriment of the court. Long lists of different instru-
ments appear to be carefully designed to convey the sumptuousness and harmony of the
court. If on the one hand this might be used as a mere rhetorical device of amplification,
on the other, it might serve a narrative function. This paper thus aims to analyse the repre-
sentation of the musical entertainment in Middle English romances in order to understand
whether specific selections of different instruments were merely used to emphasise the
lavishness of the court or rather conceived to provide further interpretative keys.
