Echi buddhisti nell’arte del Piemonte orientale: l’iconografia della Visione di sant’Eustachio

Abstract

Riassunto: L’iconografia della Visione di sant’Eustachio, diffusasi ampiamente all’interno del cristianesimo insieme all’agiografia del santo, risulta un’importante testimonianza dei contatti medievali tra Oriente e Occidente. Il presente contributo analizza i suoi esempi artistici del territorio del Piemonte orientale, a partire dai più antichi affreschi risalenti al secolo XV, concentrando l’attenzione sui probabili influssi buddhisti – rilevabili sia nella loro fonte agiografica, in particolare nell’episodio dell’incontro con il cervo divino proprio della leggenda di sant’Eustachio, sia nel loro schema iconografico – derivanti da alcuni racconti tratti dai Jātaka – testi tradizionali narranti le vite anteriori del Buddha – e da alcune loro iconografie proprie dell’arte buddhista.

Abstract: The iconography of Saint Eustace’s Vision, which spread widely in Christianity together with the saint’s hagiography, represents an important evidence of the medieval contacts between East and West. Present contribution takes into consideration its artistic examples in Eastern Piedmont, starting with the most ancient frescos dating back to the XV century, focusing the attention on the possible Buddhist influences – these can be found both in their hagiographic source, in particular in the event of the encounter with the holy deer peculiar in Saint Eustace’s legend, and in their iconographic scheme – deriving from some tales taken from the Jataka – traditional texts telling Buddha’s previous lives – and from some iconographies typical of Buddhist art.
