La riscoperta duecentesca dell’oricello e la sua manifattura dall’antichità al Quattrocento

Abstract

Riassunto: La manifattura dell’oricello è ripercorsa attraverso le istruzioni presenti in
numerose testimonianze dall’antichità al Quattrocento, come Teofrasto, Plinio, i Papiri
greci, fino ai ricettari quattrocenteschi come il Ms. Bolognese, il Ms. Veneziano e quello
di Como. La coltivazione fiorentina dell’oricello, condotta dalla famiglia Rucellai a partire
dal XIII secolo, è inoltre discussa per accertarne la precisa colorazione. Nei testi più
antichi, come nei ricettari del Quattrocento, la tinta dell’oricello non è ritenuta violetta
come è invece sempre citata nei testi ottocenteschi, ma classificata tra i coloranti rossi,
e specificamente correlata con il ‘paonazzo’ in quanto succedaneo della estinta porpora
fenicia.

Abstract: The orchil dye manufacture is reconstrued through the prescriptions contained
in several ancient texts: Theophrastus, Pliny the older, the Greek Papyri until recipe books
such as Bolognese Ms., Venetian Ms. and Como Ms., together with other occurrences of
Fifteenth century. The orchil’s Florentine cultivation since XIII century by Rucellai family
is also discussed in order its hue. In the texts published during XIX century the orchil’s
hue was described as purple color, but in the texts of previous centuries the same dyestuff
was identified as deep red, and related with ‘paonazzo’, term referring to a mixture of dyes
to obtain a substitute for the extinct Phoenician ‘purpura’.
